The Matrix (Rating Scale) question type allows you to display a table format where respondents can rate multiple items against a consistent set of scale options (e.g., satisfaction, agreement, frequency). It’s an efficient way to collect structured feedback on multiple variables in a compact layout.

Use Matrix when:

  • You want users to rate or evaluate multiple items side-by-side

  • You’re conducting employee surveys, product feedback, or service evaluation

  • You want quantifiable data across a fixed scale (e.g., 1–5, Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree)

📌 Matrix / Rating Scale questions are available on all Zonka Feedback plans.

What is a Matrix question?

  • A grid-style question with rows (statements/items) and columns (scale points)

  • Each row is evaluated individually across the same set of scale options

  • Supports both radio button (single choice per row) and checkbox (multi-select per row) formats

Where to use Matrix / Rating Scale

  • Customer or employee satisfaction surveys

  • Product feature evaluation

  • Training, learning, or event feedback

  • Comparing services, attributes, or experiences

How to Add a Matrix Question

To add a Matrix or Rating Scale question to your survey:

  • Go to the Survey Hub and select the survey you want to edit.

  • Navigate to the Build section of the survey.

  • From the Question Types Panel, find and select Matrix / Rating Scale under the Choices category.

  • Drag and drop the Matrix question into your survey canvas.

  • Click on the question to edit the label (e.g., "Please rate the following statements")

Customization options

  • Question Label: E.g., “Rate the following based on your experience”

  • Add Rows: Define the items or statements being rated

  • Add Columns: Define the scale (e.g., 1–5, Excellent–Poor, Agree–Disagree)

  • Response Type:

    • Radio Buttons: Only one selection per row

    • Checkboxes: Allow multiple selections per row

  • Make it Required: Ensure all rows are answered

  • Randomize Rows: Shuffle statements for each respondent

  • Survey Logic: Apply logic based on individual row responses

Things to keep in mind

  • Keep scales consistent and clear to avoid confusion

  • Use fewer rows and columns on mobile for better readability

  • Matrix is ideal for structured, comparable data, not open-ended input
